In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the long-term effects of CLA on body composition were investigated. 180 overweight men and women were randomly divided into three groups. The first group received CLA as free fatty acid, the second group received CLA as triglyceride and the last group received a placebo supplement. The study participants were instructed to maintain their usual dietary habits and not make too much lifestyle changes.
After one year, the study was terminated and the results of the three groups compared. The CLA groups showed a significantly lower body fat mass compared to the placebo group. The body fat mass could be reduced in both groups on average by 1.7 and 2.5 kilograms - without diet. In addition, the CLA groups experienced a slight increase in lean muscle mass. No side effects could be detected.

CLA supports fat loss via multiple mechanisms of action


Several modes of action are responsible for the fat-reducing effect of CLA: on the one hand, the inhibition of the enzyme lipoprotein lipase reduces the fatty acids' storage in the fat cells. On the other hand, there is an increased oxidation of fatty acids in the mitochondria (cell power plants), the fat burning is thus stimulated. CLA also reduces leptin levels. Leptin is a hormone that is released into the bloodstream by the fat cells and plays a key role in the regulation of body weight. In addition, CLA increases the apoptosis (programmed cell death) of fat cells and thus reduces their number.



The optimal intake was determined in various studies as three to four grams of CLA per day. With a normal diet, however, we do not consume more than about 300 mg of CLA per day, but this is not enough to benefit from the positive effects of this fatty acid. So if you want to use CLA effectively for fat loss, you should buy a CLA drug in the pharmacy.
